چکیده

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of C-reactive protein (CRP) or placenta growth factor (PIGF) on atherosclerotic plaque stability. Methods: Fifty-five patients were recruited from among individuals who underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in the Vascular Surgery department of the Fifth Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2008 to June 2009. The patients were divided into symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. Symptomatic patients were stratified according to the transient ischemic attack (TIA) frequency within six months: level I (1-2), level II (3-5), or level III (6 or more). CRP and PlGF expression were assayed and analyzed to determine whether they were associated with plaque stability. Results: No significant differences were found in CRP expression between the two groups, but PlGF expression in asymptomatic patients was lower in symptomatic patients. PlGF expression in asymptomatic patients was found to be positively related with TIA frequency, suggesting that lowering the PlGF level may represent an effective strategy to stabilize atherosclerotic plaques. Relation between Malnutrition–Inflammation–Atherosclerosis (MIA complex) in Diabetic Patients with Peritoneal Dialysis

Objective: Atherosclerosis disease, inflammation and malnutrition have strong association with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most commonly ESRD causes. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) could be associated with inflammation. Type 2 diabetic patients with advanced nephropathy show the highest levels of inflammatory markers. This study was designed to determine the associa...

C-reactive protein is an independent predictor of the rate of increase in early carotid atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND An elevated plasma concentration of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is a strong predictor of cardiovascular events. However, there have been no longitudinal studies of the relations between development of atherosclerotic lesions and hs-CRP concentrations. Furthermore, it remains unknown whether increased hs-CRP concentrations result in the development of atherosclerosis....

Placental growth factor promotes atherosclerotic intimal thickening and macrophage accumulation.

BACKGROUND Placental growth factor (PlGF) has been implicated in the pathophysiological angiogenesis and monocyte recruitment that underlie chronic inflammatory disease, but its role in atherosclerosis has not been examined. We investigated the effects of exogenous PlGF, delivered by adenoviral gene transfer, on atherogenic intimal thickening and macrophage accumulation induced by collar placem...

Relationship between C-reactive protein and progression of early carotid atherosclerosis in hypertensive subjects.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hypertensive outpatients were investigated for C-reactive protein (CRP) and carotid atherosclerosis because the influence of CRP on the progression of subclinical atherosclerosis in hypertensives remains unclear. METHODS A total of 124 outpatients (aged 40 to 79 years) in treatment for hypertension were enrolled. They underwent repeated ultrasonographic evaluation of th...

Endogenous expression of C-reactive protein is increased in active (ulcerated noncomplicated) human carotid artery plaques.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE There is growing evidence suggesting that C-reactive protein (CRP) is an effecter molecule able to induce and promote atherothrombosis. The presence of CRP in atherosclerotic plaques may reflect local production or infiltration from circulating CRP increased in general inflammatory responses. Our aim was to analyze the presence of CRP in human advanced carotid artery plaq...
